The walls of the concert hall will come down - imagine yourself weightless in the wonderous world of stars and planets surrounding us in Whitacre's Deep Field: a work for orchestra, choir and smartphone.

Eric Whitacre invites the audience to give shape to the sound of the cosmos. The clouds of orchestral sound flowing into each other are like the strange but beautiful gas clouds many light years away. Activating the special Deep Field app does not only create electronic music, but also the visually stunning imagery of the famous Deep Field photo.

Deep Field was inspired by the world’s most famous space observatory, the Hubble Space Telescope, and its greatest discovery – the iconic Deep Field image. The piece paints the incredible story of the Hubble Deep Field. Turning its gaze to a tiny and seemingly dark area of space (around one 24-millionth of the sky) and left for a 10-day long exposure, the Hubble Space Telescope revealed over 3,000 galaxies that had never previously been seen, each one composed of hundreds of billions of stars.

“The idea is that the entire piece will play and as it comes down in the end, everyone in the audience will have pre-downloaded apps, I'll give a downbeat and everyone will start their phones at the same time to create this kind of shimmering, ambient music out there, and each phone will have one of these galaxies slowly rotating. We'll all hold up our phones and we'll recreate the specter of the Deep Field image in real time.”
