A programme in which the contrapuntal mastery of Johann Sebastian Bach is at the core: with music by Bach himself, including Preludes and Fugues from The Well-Tempered Klavier, and music inspired by Bach.
The ringing simplicity of the piano, in the skillful hands of Julien Libeer, contrasting with the rich sound texture of the vocal works. Or how a rational technique can move us so deeply.
The ancient counterpoint had and has an enormous impact on the identity, personality and expression of Western music. It made classical music richer and more layered, and reached its high point at the virtuoso hands of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Fugue, canon, imitation: there was no contrapuntal technique that was alien to him. The ripple effect of his work on the musical world has extended over the centuries and influenced just about all music written after him – right down to jazz.
An homage to counterpoint, in other words: the art of creating a texture out of something as ethereal as sound, in which melody and harmony become almost tangible, is still ‘alive and kicking’ today – thanks to the great master Johann Sebastian Bach.
